l982 pic..? Well first, it looked like sunny, lazy day at Peden. However, there was no guard posted at the main front gate.In the past, there was guard duty detail for the main gate as well as the ammo dump(believe 3 to 4).The front gate assignment was selective and coveted. We wore our dress uniform with the scarlet scarf but not armed. On the other hand the ammo dump assignment was entirely different ,carrying loaded M-14 and it was real spooky at night. There was no comfort zone out there.Maybe someone can clarify why there was no front gate guard in the l982 pic. Just food for thought.
Hello Usually you get conected for other reasons, but possibly you can help me in some way. My Name is Marcel Richardson, I'm 25 from Pforzheim Germany. My father was on base Peden in Wertheim around 1985. I never met him but I'm trying to find out where he is. His name is Laimont Philpot and was from Atlanta GA. Do you maybe have an idea how to find him ?
I can explain why no guard. The 1982 picture is taken @25 feet inside the front gate. Bldg 2 is off to the right, and the MP Station with parking lot is directly to the front. The "gate" you see in the picture isn't the entrance.
If you look at the 2008 picture, and see the red brick sidewalk in the foreground, that is where the Guard shack used to stand with the big arm that blocked both entrance and exit when down. I think the 6981st used to manage the guard shifts and they had a barracks right next to the DYA/AYA. I used to play cards and drink their bier! Spessart Bier! It was 1DM for a beer and 20pf for the empty bottle. Couldn't beat the price!
