This photo was taken by the official battalion photographer in August 68 for the FTX at Graf. The Russians had just invaded Prague, Czechoslovakia when /35 was at Graf for the FTX. We didn't know if we were at Graf on a training exercise or were going to war with the Soviets in Czechoslovakia.

Graf.too close for comfort.

I always thought about how close
Graf. was to the Czech.border and
if war broke out right in the forefront of battle.Over the
yrs tensions ebbed and flowed bet-
weem West and East(Nato vs Warsaw Pact) and thankfully it didn't result in war.72nd F/A Grp.HHB.

Graf:3/35th and 72nd F/A
For the 3/35th simply put they
clearly had mission in firing the
big howitzers.72nd F/A our duties
were elementary.For example,in
our section we spent most of the time being placed on guard duty
which wasn't too glamorous esp.
on rainy night wearing a poncho
and carrying a M-14. I would like to know how many vehicles were stolen at Graf.During our free time we took off to the snackbar or self-directed recon. mission. If one was hanging around the barracks,he would be likely candidate for clean up detail. No one wanted to do that.
Remember the dreaded army jargon,
"police the area".Oh no!
